Susan Conger, Fiddler
BiographySusan Conger grew up playing classical violin, and as an adult was drawn to the fiddle tunes she heard while contradancing. In 1987 she followed the tunes and dances to western Massachusetts. Much to her own surprise, what began as a hobby evolved into a full-time career. Locally, she has played for monthly and weekly contradance series in South Amherst, Amherst, Montague, and Greenfield, and for countless special events in the schools and community. Together with Susie Secco, she is the organizer of the Fourth Saturday Contradance series in South Amherst. She teaches private lessons in fiddle and classical violin in her Montague Center studio and has taught fiddle classes for Artspace Community Arts Center in Greenfield. Farther afield, Susan has taught fiddle at Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp every summer since 1991, and at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. She has performed at numerous dance camps and festivals, including Pinewoods (MA), The Dance Flurry (NY), JCCFS Winter Dance Week (NC), Winter Dance Fest at Ashokan (NY), Lady of the Lake Camp (ID), MaineWoods Dance Camp (ME), Ralph Page Legacy Weekend (NH), Down East Country Dance Festival (ME), Wannadance Uptown (WA), Pittsburgh Fall Weekend (PA), Star Hampshire (NH), The Folk Project Festival (NJ), Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival (NS), and Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (NY). In 1999, Susan edited and published Along the River, a collection of reels, jigs, waltzes, and other dance tunes written in the last 25 years by musicians from the Connecticut River Valley. In 2000 she produced the Along the River companion CD, which features eight musicians and 28 tunes from the book.
